The local Anangu Aboriginal people believe that with the local weather, there are five seasons at Ayers Rock. But one thing is undeniable about their sacred site – this is a land of extremes.

Ayers Rock Weather

Record summer highs of above 50ºC have been reported, while winter lows often drop to quite chilly temperatures. No matter when you come for a tour of Ayers Rock, be sure to come prepared for hot, dry days and cold nights.

Visitors from the Western Hemisphere should keep in mind that Australia’s seasons are opposite to those in Europe and North America. Summers at Ayers Rock run from November to February, and winters fall between May and August. Uluru is a very dry, sunny part of Australia.

The average UV index here is between 11 and 15 all year round, which is very high on the global scale.

What little rain that falls typically arrives between October and March, and even then it is in the form of sporadic, powerful thunderstorms.

The Aboriginal people call this season Itjanu, from January through March. Travellers on an Ayers Rock tour during these months should keep an eye on the weather forecast at Ayers Rock to stay on top of any possible storms.

The average daytime high during the peak summer months of December and January is 38ºC, though the mercury typically breaks the 40ºC barrier and can even hit 50ºC. Be sure to bring lots of water, sunscreen and a hat for any tour in Ayers Rock during the summer season.

Winters offer the most pleasant weather, with average daytime highs of 20ºC in June and July. Be prepared for chilly nights, however, as the temperatures typically drop to around 5ºC during the peak winter months.

April and May are widely regarded as ideal times to visit Uluru, as temperatures are nice and warm and there is little chance of rain.

September and October are also great months to visit because this is when many of the desert plants bloom and the wildlife is more active than at any other time of the year.

All of the weather at Uluru makes for some amazing sunsets over the rock.
